The Beach
Harvey has been away, and the weather has been beautiful - hot but not too hot. (Although the lack of rain is pretty depressing).
So Marisia and I decided to take the kids to the beach. With little kids nothing is simple. We decided on Point Lonsdale. Anglesea etc too far. I don't like Bay beaches. The best compromise was Point Lonsdale. Its out of Melbourne, even though technically still a Bay beach, and it is a great little beach for kids but you can see out to the ocean. Access and parking are easy.
However, the night before out day out, Austin kept his mother up half the night and the Nan had a bad night too, so driving on the drowse-inducing Geeling Road didn't seem like a smart idea. In the end we went to Sandringham.
I remembered why I don't like Bay beaches! Dreary little strip of narrow sand, too steeply shelving to the water, very expensive parking.
However, we put up our beach tent and made the best of it. And guess who loved it! Off she went, heading off all by herself, down one end to what passes for rocks, a person-made heaped up pile. Then later, off to the other end. It was hard to drag her away. She splashed at the edge of the water, ran through it, made sand-castles. I think she loved the freedom. City kids are so confined. All this space where she can get away from the constantly hovering adults within the small spaces of home and her world in general.
At the end of the afternoon when we were walking along the path on top of the cliff, Ada looked out over the beach and the sea and said "I'm happy!" So we will try again for Point Lonsdale next week - this week they are going to Bright and then I'm going to Warrnambool, and also during the rest of the summer where there are afternoons and its warm, I reckon its worth trying Port Melbourne, a much shorter drive. Just to get Ada some beach!
