Bad Hens

The mother hen and two young ones have been established in the chookhouse since Christmas Day afternoon.   The poor little roosters - three of them - had to go once they had been crowing for about a week.

At that point, the mother stopped being a mother, and Cas said I could keep her as well as the two young pullets, and so now there is a threesome, with a pecking order.

Around the time that the roosters left, and the mother stopped being a mother (about two weeks ago) a mystery developed.   The usual sort of mystery you can get with chooks.   The mother, now known as Henny Penny - Ada has named them - started to get out.

It took me some days to figure out where - a bit of loose wire near the door.

It took me several more days to find the eggs.  Hidden under a strappy plant, a very nice nest for her.   I've been leaving one egg there each day, to make sure she doesn't find another nest.

But yesterday everything changed again.

They all got out.   Fair enough I thought, but then I came inside for some hours, and when I went out into the back garden again, they had all gone!

After a frantic search, I discovered them - in the front garden!

(Having trouble with picture placement here....)

So I am going to keep them in for most of the time, and make a nice nesting place inside the run.  They are of course most welcome to go into the front and give their chookly services of insect control etc there, but only under strict supervision from now on.   After all, what would happen if they flew over the front fence?

House Maintenance News

The House is Being Painted!!

And oh no look what he did to my front garden...........

At least this gives me a chance to do some garden renovating.    I will get rid of the Big Blue Bush (Alyogyne or Native Hibiscus) and put in a fruit tree of some sort.

Re the painting - I have to choose a trim color.   The house is a very pale green, but in parts, depending on the light and time of day, it looks almost white.........

Kinglake 2009 and 2013

My sister Mimi was here for a few days just after New Years.   We mostly worked on the house (pics to follow).

But we drove up to Kinglake one afternoon .  She hadn't ever been there.
We used the hairy road via Hurstbridge and stopped where we could and took some photos.   I had taken some from the same road just after the Black Saturday fires - in April 2009.

These photos show the bush just after the fires and now.
I wonder though with climate change, if we are in for extended drought again, will we keep getting such natural recovery?

Just after the fires:

And now:

Harvey is away for work for a few days, and Marisia and the kids have stayed two nights - I stayed there on another night, and tonight Jim and Marion are going to stay there.
What a lot of work!
Late last night, long after Ada was asleep, I took some shots of Austin in Marisia's arms.
Here are some of them.

They are also on Google Plus.  But desperate to get a post onto this blog!

A little homefront industry. Three days of preparation for the smallest of spaces.
